Newcastle 3–0 Benfica: Mourinho’s Side Outclassed as Magpies Return to Winning Ways

Newcastle United romped to a dominant 3–0 victory over SL Benfica on Tuesday night at St James’ Park, handing boss José Mourinho one of his toughest nights in the Champions League.

The Magpies were sharp from the outset, with Anthony Gordon opening the scoring in the 32nd minute to become the first Newcastle player to find the net in three straight Champions League games.
As the game progressed, the visitors looked rattled missing chances and failing to adapt to Newcastle’s intensity. The hosts struck again after the break when Harvey Barnes, introduced from the bench, converted a superb long-throw assist from goalkeeper Nick Pope in the 70th minute. Barnes then wrapped up the night with a second goal in the 83rd minute, after another clever pass from Gordon.

For Benfica, the clash exposed deep issues. Their high-line defence was exposed repeatedly, and they created very little after conceding the opener. Mourinho’s squad, despite its pedigree, looked disjointed and lacked the sharpness needed at this level.

The result lifts Newcastle’s hopes of progressing in the Champions League, moving them into a strong position in their group. Meanwhile, Benfica sit bottom, still searching for their first point.

🗣️ Manager Reactions:

Eddie Howe (Newcastle):

“The players were outstanding tonight. We pressed, we created chances and we took them. It’s a great win for everyone at this club.”

José Mourinho (Benfica):

“They were better in every area. There’s no shame in losing to a team that is sharp and well-prepared. But we must learn.”

📊 Match Highlights:

  • Scorers: Gordon 32′; Barnes 70′, 83′
  • Notable Stats: Newcastle registered 7 shots on target versus only 1 for Benfica.
  • Attendance: Approx. 52,000 at St James’ Park.
