Liverpool’s Crisis Deepens with 3–2 Defeat at Brentford
Liverpool suffered a dramatic 3–2 defeat at Brentford FC’s Gtech Community Stadium yesterday, marking their fourth consecutive Premier League loss a run unseen at the club since February 2021.
The match saw Brentford take the initiative early, with a stunning opener by Dango Ouattara in just the 5th minute, stemmed from a long throw-in which caused havoc in Liverpool’s defence. A second goal followed just before half-time when Kevin Schade raced in behind and finished coolly.
Liverpool pulled one back in first-half stoppage time via Milos Kerkez, offering brief hope. But in the second half, a penalty converted by Igor Thiago restored Brentford’s two-goal cushion after a foul by Virgil van Dijk was upgraded by VAR. Mohamed Salah’s late strike in the 89th minute provided momentary excitement, yet it proved too little, too late for the Reds.
The result leaves Liverpool in sixth place in the Premier League table on 15 points now four points behind league leaders Arsenal FC, with the gap poised to widen if Arsenal win their next game.
Manager Arne Slot admitted the result was one of his worst as Liverpool boss, acknowledging his side were out-duelled and lacked fight and structure. Major concerns now centre on Liverpool’s defensive frailties (they’ve failed to keep a clean sheet in nine matches) and the fact they’ve already lost as many league games this season as they did in the whole of last season.
This run raises serious questions about Liverpool’s title defence. The club now joins an unwanted list becoming only the fourth reigning Premier League champion to lose four consecutive league games.
Liverpool must act quickly. With big fixtures ahead and momentum fading, the next few weeks could define whether this season turns into a comeback or a major collapse.
