Eddie Nketiah Mulls International Switch to Ghana Ahead of AFCON & World Cup Qualifiers

Arsenal forward Eddie Nketiah is reportedly weighing up a potential international switch from England to Ghana, with talks said to be progressing ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

The 25-year-old striker, who has represented England across youth levels and made a single senior appearance, remains eligible to play for Ghana through his parents. According to multiple reports from London and Accra, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has renewed its approach to convince Nketiah to commit to the Black Stars after years of speculation.

Nketiah, who has struggled for consistent minutes under Mikel Arteta this season, is believed to be open to the idea of playing a central role in Ghana’s squad something he hasn’t yet experienced with the Three Lions.

“Eddie wants to play at the highest level internationally, and Ghana’s recent progress makes it a very attractive option,” a close source told The Telegraph. “He’s seriously considering making the switch before the next international window.”

Ghana, who are currently preparing for AFCON 2025 in Morocco, are eager to strengthen their attacking options following inconsistent performances during the qualifiers. Head coach Otto Addo is said to have personally reached out to Nketiah to discuss his potential role in the team’s setup, highlighting his pace, finishing ability, and experience at the top level with Arsenal.

The move would mirror that of other English-born players of Ghanaian descent, such as Inaki Williams and Tariq Lamptey, both of whom have successfully transitioned to represent the Black Stars.

For Nketiah, the decision could also be influenced by the intense competition for England’s attacking positions, with Harry Kane, Ollie Watkins, and Ivan Toney all ahead in the pecking order.

Former Ghana international Asamoah Gyan recently voiced his support for the switch, stating:

“Eddie has the quality and discipline to lead the line for Ghana. He knows what it means to wear that jersey it’s more than football, it’s pride.”

If Nketiah decides to commit, FIFA’s eligibility rules allow him to make the change since he has made fewer than three competitive senior appearances for England and is under 27 years old.

Ghana’s next World Cup qualifiers are scheduled for November, where they’ll face Madagascar and Mali potential debut fixtures if Nketiah completes the switch in time.

This decision could be a defining moment in Nketiah’s international career trading the depth of England’s bench for the opportunity to become Ghana’s main striker on the global stage.
