Chris Hughton Set to Take Charge of Zimbabwe National Team: A Return to the Dugout

veteran football manager Chris Hughton is reportedly set to take charge of the Zimbabwe national football team, marking his long-awaited return to the dugout after months out of management. The appointment, expected to be formalized by the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) in the coming days, signals a major step in the nation’s ambitions to rebuild its footballing identity on the African stage.

Hughton, 66, who has previously managed Premier League clubs including Newcastle United, Brighton & Hove Albion, and Nottingham Forest, brings a wealth of top-flight experience to the Warriors. He has previously served as an advisor to the Zimbabwe FA and was briefly linked to the head coach role in 2022 before opting to continue his career in England.

According to sources close to ZIFA, the move comes after an extensive review of Zimbabwe’s coaching setup following their disappointing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign. Hughton’s experience, tactical acumen, and calm leadership were seen as ideal qualities to restore structure and professionalism to the national side.

If confirmed, Hughton will be tasked with preparing Zimbabwe for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers and rebuilding confidence among fans and players alike after years of administrative challenges and inconsistent performances.

Hughton, born in London to an Irish mother and Ghanaian father, has long been regarded as a pioneer for Black managers in British football. His appointment would make him one of only a handful of European-based coaches leading an African national team with roots in the continent.

A ZIFA spokesperson hinted at the imminent announcement, stating:

“We have held positive discussions with Mr. Hughton and are finalizing the details. He is enthusiastic about the project and eager to help Zimbabwe reach its full potential.”

Fans in Harare have already begun expressing optimism on social media, calling Hughton’s potential arrival a “new dawn” for Zimbabwean football. His reputation for instilling discipline, defensive organization, and player development could be exactly what the team needs to compete effectively at the continental level.

If all goes according to plan, Hughton could be in the dugout for Zimbabwe’s next international friendly later this month, marking the beginning of a new chapter for both the coach and the country’s football ambitions.
