Liverpool’s young defender Jarell Quansah has officially completed a move to Bayer Leverkusen, ending his five-year stay at Anfield in search of more consistent first-team football. The 22-year-old centre-back, regarded as one of Liverpool’s most promising academy graduates, joins Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen side on a long-term deal worth an estimated £25 million.
After breaking into the senior team under Jürgen Klopp, Quansah made 24 appearances in all competitions last season. Despite showing promise, competition for places at Liverpool has intensified, with Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konaté, and new signing Gonçalo Inácio ahead of him in the pecking order.
Speaking to Leverkusen’s official website, Quansah said:
“I’ve loved every moment at Liverpool, but I need to play regularly to develop. Leverkusen’s project under Xabi Alonso is exciting — it’s about football, growth, and trust.”
Leverkusen, currently top of the Bundesliga, were quick to pounce on Quansah’s availability. Alonso reportedly sees him as a long-term defensive solution, especially with Jonathan Tah potentially moving to the Premier League next summer.
Liverpool issued a short farewell message on social media, thanking Quansah for his professionalism and wishing him success abroad.
“Everyone at Liverpool thanks Jarell for his dedication and wishes him the very best at Leverkusen,” the statement read.
Fans have expressed mixed reactions while many understand his need for playing time, others worry the club may regret losing another homegrown talent.
Quansah’s move mirrors a growing trend among English youngsters seeking regular minutes in European leagues, following the likes of Jude Bellingham and Jadon Sancho, who found success after moving abroad.
With Leverkusen fighting on multiple fronts this season, Quansah could get the perfect platform to showcase his talent — and prove that leaving Anfield was the right decision.
