Gavi Undergoes Knee Surgery as Barcelona Prepare to Host Real Sociedad at Montjuïc

Barcelona’s injury woes continue as young midfield star Gavi has undergone arthroscopic surgery on his right knee, ruling him out for up to five months.

The Spanish international suffered a medial meniscus injury during training and was taken in for immediate medical checks. Club doctors confirmed successful surgery but stated the 21-year-old will require a lengthy rehabilitation period, keeping him sidelined until early 2026.

This comes as a blow to manager Hansi Flick, who already has several key players dealing with fitness issues. Gavi, widely regarded as one of Barça’s most promising talents, has been pivotal in their midfield setup, providing energy, pressing intensity, and creativity.

Meanwhile, Barcelona’s upcoming La Liga clash against Real Sociedad will not take place at the iconic Camp Nou. Renovations at the stadium mean the fixture will be hosted at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys (Montjuïc), which will serve as Barça’s temporary home ground this season.

🗣️ Club Statement

“Gavi underwent arthroscopic surgery on the medial meniscus of his right knee today. The operation was a success, and he will be unavailable for selection for approximately 20 weeks.”

The timing couldn’t be worse, with Barcelona facing a congested fixture schedule in La Liga and the Champions League. Flick will now rely heavily on Frenkie de Jong, Pedri, and new signing Fermín López to cover the midfield void.

⚽ What It Means for Barcelona

  • Gavi will miss the El Clásico fixtures against Real Madrid.
  • Young academy players could see more playing time.
  • Barcelona fans will need to adapt to the new Montjuïc atmosphere, which holds 55,000 fans compared to Camp Nou’s 99,000.

Barcelona remain confident, however, that the squad depth can cover the loss and that Gavi will return stronger than ever.
